How the SEA™ Came to Be

I designed the WDSA™ (Water Draining Spandrel Assembly) and the FOI™ (Fortified Opaque Infill) in parallel. Built mock-ups for a lab test. Built dozens of samples. Built one full project with it. Then procurement restrictions rubbed me the wrong way — the kind of friction that tells you the design isn't finished yet, even when it's already working. So I went back to the drawing board. Stretched it. Trimmed it. Deleted parts that didn't earn their place. Turned it around in my head more times than I can count. Then I stretched it one last time, trimmed it down again — and what came out the other side wasn't a variation on the WDSA™. It was the SEA™: one design philosophy that does it all.

One Assembly. Enables 9 Jobs. Zero Compromises.

The SEA™ (Spanning Enabling Assembly) isn’t a connector. It’s the part that makes the entire PortalWall® system work.

It carries exterior fascia, thermal modules & spanning diaphragm. Three distinct systems, one assembly. Conventional vertical framing eliminated.
It collects & drains water.
It houses. Cradles the thermal modules that regulate the wall’s performance.
It cradles. Seats and secures the FORTIFIED OPAQUE INfill™ (FOI™) in place.
It fastens. Ties the entire assembly back to the building structure.
It stops fire and smoke. With no vertical spanning from floor to floor, the wall separates each level at the slab line. Fire spreads heat, and heat causes combustion, so fire and smoke stay more segregated.
It feeds the DelugeWall™. The SEA™ is the water source for the DelugeWall™, which wets the enclosure surfaces and is designed to keep them from combusting.
It compartmentalizes. True thermal decoupling. No thermal flanking. Unlike state-of-the-art curtain wall systems, the SEA™ keeps each zone contained. This is the Decoupled-CW™, not a description but a category.
It activates the Within-Wall™ Cavity. New feature, patent pending. It unlocks global deployment because everything is centered on a single assembly.

Within-Wall™ Cavity - Core Performance Indicators

Active Thermal Buffer: Warming the cavity to near-room temperature, reduces the cold thermal sink that exists behind traditional interior wall partitions.

WVA™ (Water Vapor Aloft™): Prioritizes occupant health and indoor air quality by maintaining vapor balance within the occupied living space—where people live and breathe—rather than allowing it to migrate into and become trapped within the cold-side wall assembly.

LEA™ (Latent Energy Aloft™): Enhances building envelope efficiency by leveraging the latent heat capacity of ambient indoor humidity. By maintaining vapor aloft within the conditioned envelope, the system utilizes latent energy to act as an insulating thermal blanket, stabilizing indoor microclimates and reducing overall HVAC energy demand.

July 25, 2025 – THERM Analysis Summary

WVA™ communicates wellness and efficiency. Not theory, but a measurable signal: it proves the enclosure works in harmony with nature — preserving water vapor in the breathing zone where health and comfort belong.

A full thermal analysis conducted with LBNL’s industry-standard THERM software confirmed that the PortalWall® assembly exhibits zero condensation risk under design conditions.

Even at outdoor temperatures as low as 0°F, interior surface temperatures remain well above the dew point — ensuring dry, mold-resistant performance.

This superior result is driven by the system’s underlying thermal logic:

Flat-sheet diaphragm — replaces conventional vertical framing, absorbing and distributing energy uniformly.
No vertical framing members — eliminating weak points typical of conventional façades.
Continuous Outsulate™ capability — the flat diaphragm creates a robust plane for uninterrupted exterior insulation.
